Strep A outbreak kills over 70 in UK as three more children die of bacterial infection

The United Kingdom Health Security Agency released the latest reports on spreading group A streptococcus infections and scarlet fever. The total death toll has risen above 70, including 19 children.

Officials from the United Kingdom Health Security Agency told the press this afternoon that strep A outbreak spreading across England has killed three more children. To date, 19 children have fallen prey to the bacterial infections.

An alarm was raised that there was not enough penicillin available to treat the affected young children. This led to the Agency making a full-blown report on the outbreaks.

The Agency has announced that there was a total of 74 deaths due to Strep A infections. Out of the 74, 19 are minors, under the age of 18 years.

The three latest minor victims of these infections were Hanna Roap, a primary school student from Penarth, South Wales, a John Doe from Powys, Wales, and Stella-Lily McCorkindale, a five-year-old from Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Strep A can cause anything from minor infections to deadly diseases. Some of the common infections caused by Strep A are skin infections, strep throat, and scarlet fever.

Medical professionals believe that post-COVID, people's immunity has not remained as strong as it was. The weakened immunity of people could be a cause of these infections spreading quickly and taking lives faster than they should.

This is not the first strep A outbreak in the UK. In 2017-18, a total of 355 deaths occurred due to strep A, out of which 27 were children under the age of 18 years.

The Health Agency predicts that in the next few days, GPs and A&Es could be flooded with parents as they were warned not to self-diagnose their children or give leftover antibiotics.

The Deputy Director of the UKHSA, Dr. Colin Brown, said that strep throat and scarlet fever could be easily treated with antibiotics. If parents notice symptoms like sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, swollen glands, headache, swollen tongue, or sandpaper type of rash on the body, they should immediately contact a healthcare provider. Parents can take help from resources provided at NHS.UK or call 111 for online help.
