A large African huntsman spider was discovered in Edinburgh after it inadvertently stowed away in a traveler's suitcase, according to the Scottish SPCA. The 10cm spider was found at a property on Boswall Drive, prompting the animal charity to take immediate action.

The individual in question had recently returned from a work placement in Africa, where huntsman spiders are commonly found in warm and tropical regions across Africa, Asia, and Australia. Acting swiftly, the traveler managed to capture the spider in a plastic box.

Catherine Atterton, an animal rescue officer with the Scottish SPCA, described the spider as "very fast" and known for its agility and jumping ability. Fortunately, the member of the public successfully contained the arachnid. The spider appeared unharmed despite its long journey and was subsequently transported to one of the Scottish SPCA's animal rescue and rehoming centers for quarantine.

The Scottish SPCA has been coordinating with its contacts to secure a suitable home for the huntsman spider. A specialist residing in Kent has offered to provide a safe environment where the spider can live out the remainder of its life comfortably.

What is a Hunstman spider?

Huntsman spiders are recognized as the world's largest spiders in terms of leg span, capable of reaching approximately 28cm when fully grown. Although possessing venom, huntsman spiders are generally reluctant to bite and pose no significant threat to humans.
