The wet and windy weather is expected to reach its peak on Thursday, but the warnings will begin on Wednesday and extend into the weekend, lasting until Saturday morning. Babet is the second named storm of the season, and the Met Office has cautioned that it could have severe effects on the country. The heavy rainfall could potentially lead to flooding and disruption across various parts of the UK.
Yellow weather warnings have been issued for the East of England, the North East, Yorkshire, the East Midlands, parts of eastern Northern Ireland, and most of Scotland. The first weather warning for the four-day storm will come into effect tomorrow morning, starting with Northern Ireland. Counties like Antrim, Armagh, and Down fall within the yellow warning zone. As the storm progresses, it will sweep towards the east, encompassing a significant portion of the UK by the evening.
The weather warning will be in place from 9pm tomorrow and will continue until the weekend, with the north and north-east regions expected to experience the brunt of the stormy weather. All warnings are currently projected to end on Saturday, the last one concluding at midday.
The Met Office has stated, "While there is still some uncertainty regarding the timing and duration of rainfall throughout the coming week, there is potential for disruptive, heavy, and prolonged rainfall in central and eastern Scotland. The heaviest rainfall is expected over Angus and southeast Grampian, although even lower lying areas could experience unusually heavy rainfall during this period. We anticipate widespread rainfall of 70-100mm, with some upland areas potentially receiving as much as 150-200mm. Strong southeasterly winds are likely to accompany the heavy rainfall, which could exacerbate the impacts."
As the storm approaches, residents in the affected areas are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and keep a note of any warnings or advisories from local authorities.
