As extreme heat continues to impact southern Europe, 16 cities in Italy have issued red alerts. These alerts, which apply to popular tourist destinations such as Rome, Florence and Bologna, indicate risks even for healthy individuals. The heatwave has persisted longer than usual, with high night-time temperatures. Another heatwave is expected in Europe next week, reflecting a global trend of more frequent, intense and prolonged heat waves due to climate change.

Heat waves may have harmful consequences on the body, thus it is important to exercise caution and care. The affected areas' residents are advised by the Italian government to avoid exposure to direct sunlight between 11:00 and 18:00, and to put the safety of the elderly and weak first.

The scorching temperatures have made navigating crowded cities like Rome challenging. Tourists and locals alike have faced difficulties due to the persistently hot weather. In Greece, temperatures of 40°C (104°F) or higher have been recorded, leading to the closure of the Acropolis during the hottest hours. Visitors have suffered from heat-related illnesses, prompting concerns for their safety.

With high winds and dry conditions, there are increased concerns about wildfires. Greece, in particular, has experienced major wildfires in previous heatwaves. A forest fire on the Spanish island of La Palma forced the evacuation of hundreds of people, while other countries like Germany and Poland have also been affected.

The next heatwave, named Charon after the mythical Greek ferryman, is expected to push temperatures back above 40°C. Southern Spain, southeastern Italy, and Greece could experience highs of up to 47°C, potentially breaking city temperature records.
