Solihull Lake Incident: Three children dead, 6-year-old critical, read latest updates here

Three boys, ages 11, 10, and 8, died after they fell through the ice on a lake in Solihull on Sunday, according to West Midlands Police.

They fell into Babbs Mill Park's lake yesterday afternoon and were brought to the hospital after being rescued. A fourth youngster, aged six, is still in 'critical' condition.

After the four children were pulled out from the freezing lake at Babbs Mill Park last night, there are worries that more children are still in the lake. On Sunday afternoon, they slipped into the river and reportedly experienced cardiac arrest in Babbs Mill Park.


West Midlands Police Superintendent Richard Harris said, "When the fire service got on the site, we were informed that there were up to six persons in the water”.

The children, who were said to be in elementary school, were rescued and given CPR at the scene before being taken to the hospital. They were apparently playing on the ice that covered the pond when they fell in.


Locals described how people screamed that it wasn't "safe" to go on the lake, which had frozen over due to the severe weather.

According to witnesses, the ice split under two of the youngsters, and the others got themselves into trouble when they hurried over to help.

As the rescue mission proceeded, dozens of emergency personnel and equipment, including boats, fire engines, and drones, combed the area. Two children were brought to Birmingham Children's Hospital, while the other two were sent to Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.
