Snow and ice warnings across the UK: Hazardous conditions expected

Met Office warns of extended yellow snow warnings, anticipating road disruptions and treacherous driving. Icy surfaces expected; safety advisories and UKHSA cold-health alerts issued. Stay informed for safety.

Agencies
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings as wintry showers bring snow and ice to parts of the UK, leading to potentially hazardous conditions. The warnings, extended until 11 am on Friday, cover areas in Scotland and nearly all of eastern England. Snowfall has already been reported in northern England, resulting in road closures and a stranded bus in Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Police have implemented road closures due to snow and ice, with the A169 closed at White Way Heads/Saltergate Moor. Gritters and ploughs are on-site to clear the affected road. Coatham Coaches reports that routes between Guisborough and Whitby are passable, but caution is advised, especially on higher ground.

The Coast radio station serving Scarborough, Filey, Whitby, and Bridlington reports a stranded bus on Lythe Bank and describes driving conditions as "treacherous." Residents in affected areas are cautioned about showers likely to cause ice on untreated surfaces, making roads and pathways slippery.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist David Oliver anticipates an uncertain weather period for the southern half of England and Wales on Thursday and Friday. While snowfall is expected, it is likely to be transient and short-lived, causing small disruptions over a few hours before melting. Daytime temperatures are predicted to drop to cold, single-digit figures, remaining below freezing for significant parts of England and Scotland during the night.

Safety Advisories
The Met Office advises people to stay safe in icy conditions by checking on elderly relatives or neighbors who may need support. Motorists are urged to avoid driving in icy conditions if possible, and if necessary, to drive cautiously, looking ahead for potential hazards and maintaining minimum speed. Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to leave home five minutes earlier than usual and to avoid slippery surfaces.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has also issued yellow and amber cold-health alerts for northern regions of England until December 5. As the weather situation remains uncertain, residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
