The United States of America and Mexico, while not the most soccer-loving nations in the world, are famous for their rivalry with each other.

One of the highlights of their decades-old rivalry is a repeating 2-0 scoreline that has - in some cases - been maintained internationally. On the back of that, the rivalry has been nicknamed ‘Dos-a-Cero’, meaning 2-0 in Spanish.

Twenty years ago, both teams first registered the now famous scoreline at the Columbus Crew Stadium in America, during World Cup qualifying. Josh Wolff and Earnie Stewart scored for the victory.

One of the most famous Dos-a-Cero games, this match was played during the 2002 World Cup’s RO16; Mexico were the favourites to win but Brian McBride and Landon Donovan scored to deny their rivals.

A repeat of 2001, both teams were back at the same stadium but were aiming to qualify for the 2006 World Cup. Two goals from Steve Ralston and Beasley helped the USMNT to a win.

Once again, a World Cup qualifier, once again at Columbus Crew Stadium. The USMNT won again on the back of a Marcus Bradley brace.

World Cup qualifier. Columbus Crew. USMNT wins. 2-0 again. But this time, the US had the chance to score a third. Clint Dempsey was given a penalty in the final minutes only to miss. Many believe that the miss was intentional, homage to the Dos-a-Cero scoreline and the rivalry.

Mexico broke the streak for the first time, days after the election of President Donald Trump, famously anti-immigrant and heavily opposed to Mexicans. El Tri scored in the dying minutes to win 2-1.

Mexico and the USA meet again on Thursday, this time in Cincinnati. The USMNT have defeated El Tri twice over the summer. Can they start another Dos-a-Cero streak?
