Scottish gender bill: JK Rowling joins protest by wearing T-shirt to accuse Nicola Sturgeon of ‘destroying women's rights’

Harry Potter author JK Rowling showcased solidarity with protesters opposing the Scottish Government’s gender recognition proposals outside Holyrood by uploading a photo of herself wearing a T-shirt that allegedly labeled Nicola Sturgeon as the ‘destroyer of women's rights’.

Holyrood's Human Rights Committee presented its findings on gender recognition legislation, with most MSPs supporting the plans. But, the changes triggered demonstrations in the region. These recognitions include self-ID replacing the medical diagnosis, and the age dropping from 18 to 16. According to the Scottish lawmakers, the move would “simplify” the process for trans people to get a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC).

All parties supported the measures at Holyrood except the Conservatives.


Although the legislation does not affect single-sex spaces, some activists assert that the proposals threaten women's rights and single-sex areas.




Rowling has raised her voice opposing gender recognition initiatives by taking to social media and posting a picture in a T-shirt accusing Sturgeon of ‘destroying’ women’s rights. When SNP Social Justice Secretary Shona Robison testified before the committee, a protester wearing the same T-shirt was asked to leave.

Robison explained that she appreciates the Committee's endorsement of the bill's principles, which will alter the system for getting a gender recognition certificate in Scotland.

Legal gender recognition has been accessible in Scotland for 18 years, but the existing method for acquiring a Gender Recognition Certificate is being denounced by the protesters as invasive, medicalised and bureaucratic.

This contested bill proposes to streamline and improve the legal recognition procedure for transgender people, granting them greater access to their current rights.

Robinson also said that the support for trans rights does not conflict with the continued strong commitment to respecting the rights and protections granted to women and girls under the Equality Act of 2010. She asserted that the bill does not amend the existing Act.
