Scotland has passed the long-awaited gender recognition law reforms, empowering trans people to change their legal gender more easily. Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) passed the Gender Recognition Reform bill on December 22 with an 86-39 vote. The legislation is aimed at paving a fairer, simpler, and quicker way through which a trans person can change the sex marker on their birth certificate.

After the passage of the bill, the minimum age to apply for a GRC (Gender Recognition Certification) will be lowered to 16 from currently 18. Moreover, the time required for a person to prove that they have been living in their "acquired" gender will be lowered to three months from two years. But this time requirement will be of six months for people who are 16 and 17 years old.

The bill will amend the United Kingdom's Gender Recognition Act (GRA). The Scottish gender recognition law will not affect the rights trans persons are entitled to under the Equality Act 2020. Notably, the GRA and restrictions mentioned in it will remain unaffected in the rest of the United Kingdom.

However, the reform bill faced severe criticism from conservative MPs, some women's fight campaigners, and anti-trans groups. They argued that amending the GRA could end single-sex services and spaces.

While expressing their joy on the passage of the bill, LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall stated that the reforms were "a victory" for trans rights in Scotland.
