Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel didn't mince words following his team's stunning defeat at the hands of Bulls in a United Rugby Championship (URC) clash in Pretoria. Peel admitted that his squad was left reeling by Bulls' dominant performance, resulting in a record-breaking nine-try rout that left Scarlets scrambling for answers.

Despite a valiant effort from Scarlets, highlighted by Taine Plumtree's impressive debut with two tries and Johnny McNicholl's notable contribution, Bulls took control early, securing a bonus point within the first 24 minutes through a barrage of scores from Ruan Nortje, Cameron Hanekom, and Johan Grobbelaar.

The Scarlets, known for their resilient spirit, struggled to contain Bulls' relentless attacks, marking the first instance of conceding 60 points in a league match. Their 42-point margin of defeat was the second-largest in recent memory, echoing their previous challenging encounter at Loftus Versfeld two seasons ago.

Despite glimpses of promise from rising stars such as Tom Rogers, Ioan Lloyd, Dan Davis, and Ben Williams, Scarlets faltered under Bulls' relentless pressure in the second half. Bulls capitalized on defensive lapses, securing further tries through David Kriel, Stedman Gans, Akker van der Merwe, and Wandisile Simelane, along with flawless conversions from fly-half Johan Goosen.

Peel acknowledged the team's errors, emphasizing the need for improved execution and a stronger defensive presence. Scarlets made a late push for a bonus point but fell short, capping a disappointing weekend for the Welsh regions in the URC's opening fixtures.

Reflecting on the match, Peel remarked, "Bulls were very clinical in the first 25 minutes, and errors cost us dearly. We were blown away by their physicality and execution. Despite our disappointment, we must address our mistakes to perform better in the upcoming fixtures."
