Scarlet fever clusters reported at schools, nurseries across Northern Ireland; Symptoms warning issued

The PHA has issued a list of signs and symptoms following an increase in scarlet fever above normal levels for this time of year.

Agencies
Parents have been warned after scarlet fever cluster infections were detected across Northern Ireland. According to the Public Health Agency, scarlet fever has increased above normal levels recently, with group cases recorded in schools and nurseries in Antrim, Belfast, Bangor, and Craigavon.

Scarlet fever, a bacterial ailment that primarily affects children under the age of ten but can affect adults of any age, is being warned to parents and caregivers. It is not usually a severe infection, but it might have significant consequences. Hence antibiotic therapy is advised. This reduces the likelihood of problems and dissemination to others.
Scarlet fever symptoms are non-specific in the early stages of sickness and may include the following:
  • throat pain
  • headache
  • excessive heat
  • vomiting and nausea

Striking makes that hole bigger and the task of finding a resolution ever more difficult." Strikes make the hole wider and resolution harder. After 12 to 48 hours, the classic red, generalised pinhead rash appears, usually on the chest and stomach, then swiftly spreads to other regions of the body, leaving the skin with a sandpaper-like feel. The scarlet fever rash may be tougher to see on darker-pigmented skin, but the sandpaper-like texture should be there. "It's not uncommon to see a surge in scarlet fever at this time of year," said Dr. David Cromie, Consultant in Health Protection at the PHA. "We are continuing to monitor rates of infection across Northern Ireland." Scarlet fever is infectious but seldom fatal. Early antibiotic therapy decreases the likelihood of problems and transmission to others.
