The image was captured by a satellite specifically designed to monitor snow and ice across the globe. High-resolution information on snow cover area, snow state conditions, persistent snow area, and ice cover is gathered by the European Space Agency's (ESA) Copernicus satellite.
"Snow cover is an important supplier of water for industry, agriculture, and human usage," an ESA spokesperson said, summarising the satellite study's findings.
According to forecasters, this week's incredible shot shows the Alps covered with snow, which "bodes well" for the next year.

Scientists keeping a watch on this latest image are optimistic that the sufficient snowfall is a harbinger of good things to come for the area as the temperature rises in the next year.

To have a better understanding of and ability to forecast changes on a global scale, the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission is looking at the seas, continents, polar regions, and atmosphere. There is an abundance of the most cutting-edge technology available on board at all times.
Sentinel-3 is a satellite that measures the depth of rivers and lakes, the temperature of the ocean, and the colour, depth, and thickness of its ice. It also generates maps of the landscape. In addition, it offers indications of the state of the land's vegetation.
