The investigation conducted by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) implicated several other players, including Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli, who received a seven-month ban. Aston Villa's Nicolo Zaniolo awaits a decision, likely resulting ...

As part of the disciplinary action, The 23-year-old is obligated to undergo an intensive eight-month rehabilitation program and engage in a series of public activities in Italy. Additionally, it is anticipated that his substantial £11 million annual salary will be suspended, enabling Newcastle to seek a replacement player while Tonali remains eligible for training and participation in friendly matches.
The case saw Tonali's legal representatives entering a plea bargain in Rome, acknowledging his involvement in betting on matches, including those featuring his former club AC Milan. The severity of the punishment represents a significant setback for Newcastle, who made a substantial £54 million investment to secure Tonali's services during the summer transfer window.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) initiated a comprehensive investigation into the breach of betting rules, implicating Tonali and several other professional footballers. Among them, Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli has been handed a seven-month ban, with an additional five months suspended, while Aston Villa's Nicolo Zaniolo awaits an impending decision, expected to result in a monetary penalty rather than a playing suspension.
Confirming the verdict, FICG President Gabriele Gravina disclosed, "The FIGC Prosecutor and Tonali have reached an agreement which I have already approved. The agreement consists of a 10-month ban plus eight months of rehab activities and at least 16 public appearances." He further emphasized the importance of adhering to the regulatory framework while acknowledging the cooperation of the players involved in the investigation.
Although Newcastle is yet to issue an official statement regarding Tonali's suspension, the club has already compiled a shortlist of potential replacements, including Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City, Amadou Onana from Everton, Joao Palhinha from Fulham, and Scott McTominay from Manchester United.
In the face of the allegations, Tonali's agent, Guiseppe Riso, addressed the media, stating, "Sandro is playing his most important game - against betting addiction." Riso expressed Tonali's remorse and determination to confront his errors, affirming the unwavering support of Newcastle throughout this challenging period. He concluded, "He is playing the most important game of his career, that of gambling addiction, but I am sure he will win it."
