Rory McIlroy gets crowned DP World Tour number one for fourth time

Rory McIlroy has been crowned DP World Tour number one for the fourth time after ending in a tie for fourth place at DP World Tour Championship.

The 33-year-old is only the second player in history to win both the Road to Dubai and the FedEx Cup in the same season. McIlroy shot a final-round 68 at the Jumeirah Golf Estates course to finish on 16-under par, four shots behind tournament winner Jon Rahm, who won the tournament for the third time after winning in 2017 and 2019. Shane Lowry was tied for 23rd after shooting a 71 to finish on three under par.

McIlroy had put himself in contention for the tournament win after a third-round 65 on Saturday, and he was also in pole position for a fourth Harry Vardon Trophy, trailing US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick in the projected standings. He got off to a fast start on Sunday, making birdies on his first two holes before bogeying the par-4 third.




On the fifth and ninth holes, another birdie and bogey were made. However, the Hollywood golfer finished well with birdies on the 10th, 14th and 15th holes. McIlroy said after his final round that finishing atop the tour standings for the fourth time meant a lot to him. He stated that he hadn't done it in seven years. This is his fourth, but it's been a while.

Rahm won the event with a final-round 67, finishing two strokes ahead of Alexander Noren and Tyrrell Hatton. On 13 under, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood were tied for fifth, three strokes behind McIlroy.
