Ronnie Radford will always be remembered for giving John Motson a chance to begin his brilliant career with a Football Association (FA) Cup fairy tale.

Radford, whose demise was announced on Wednesday, cemented his position as an English football icon when non-league Hereford overcame first-division Newcastle in a replay of the FA Cup in February 1972.

Two memorable events

The two most important moments were Radford's offset, which refused Malcolm Macdonald's opening goal, and Motson's BBC Match of the Day commentary. Ricky George's goal ultimately gave the Southern League club a legendary success.

According to Motson, he had been on trial at Match of the Day for a year when he was chosen to call this game. He knew that Newcastle had ended in a stalemate and was a rematch. Contrary to most forecasts, it looked like Hereford would lose by one or two goals when Malcolm Macdonald scored.
