Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has cautioned that artificial intelligence has the potential to facilitate the development of chemical and biological weapons. The PM emphasized that society might find itself unable to exert control over AI systems, leaving them impossible to deactivate.

Mr. Sunak stressed that we should not ignore the risks associated with AI and adopt an ostrich-like approach. In a speech aimed at positioning the UK as a global frontrunner in the AI field, the Prime Minister stressed that AI technology is already generating employment opportunities.

He stated that the advancement of the technology could stimulate economic growth and productivity, although he acknowledged that it would affect the labor market.

The prime minister outlined the capabilities and potential risks associated with AI, such as cyber attacks, fraud, and child sexual abuse, following the release of a government report.

Mr. Sunak mentioned among the risks outlined in the report was the possibility of AI being employed by terrorist groups to propagate fear and disruption on a larger scale.

The statement emphasized the importance of making mitigating the risk of human extinction from AI a global priority. He conveyed his general optimism regarding AI's potential to positively impact people's lives.

A more immediate concern for many is the job disruption caused by AI. Mr. Sunak noted that AI tools are already efficiently handling administrative tasks such as contract preparation and decision-making, which were traditionally performed by employees.

He stated his belief that education was the solution for preparing individuals to adapt to the evolving market. He also noted that technology had historically introduced alterations to the way people earn their livelihood.

The impact of automation, for instance, has already transformed the nature of work in factories and warehouses but hasn't completely eliminated human involvement.

The prime minister emphasized that characterizing artificial intelligence as a job-taker was overly simplistic. Instead, he urged the public to consider the technology as a "co-pilot" in the day-to-day operations of the workplace.

Mr Sunak aims to establish the UK as a global leader in technology safety, a position where it cannot truly rival major players like the US and China in terms of resources or domestic tech giants.

Thus far, it appears that most of the prominent AI developers in the Western world are collaborating, yet they are also maintaining significant confidentiality regarding the data their tools are trained on and the inner workings of their systems.
