Rescue efforts underway after serious small boat mishap in English Channel

A massive search and rescue operation is now underway in the English Channel after a small boat encountered a mishap. A French source reported that around 30 to 50 individuals were on the boat when the incident happened. But according to the BBC, there have been fatalities. However, the authorities have not yet confirmed these reports.

A UK government spokesperson said, "We are aware of an incident in UK waters and all relevant agencies are supporting a coordinated response. Further details will be provided in due course."

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesperson reported that an air ambulance had been sent to the area. He added that HM Coastguard is searching for the boat in collaboration with the RNLI, Royal Navy, Border Force, French Navy, and Kent Police.



"We have sent Dover, Dungeness, Hastings and Ramsgate RNLI lifeboats and Deal, Dungeness and Folkestone coastguard rescue teams, along with the coastguard area commander," the spokesperson added.

He went on to inform, "HM Coastguard helicopters from Lydd and Lee on Solent and one from the French Navy are involved. A fishing vessel in the area is also assisting in the rescue. South East Coast Ambulance and Kent Police are working with us and an air ambulance has been sent."

It happens only hours after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak vowed to introduce new legislation to address illegal immigration.

The data analyzed by Sky News shows that as of last night at midnight, 44,711 individuals had crossed the English Channel in tiny boats. It has 1,087 boats, with an average of 41 people on each one. A total 28,526 arrivals were recorded in 2021.
