Queen Consort Camilla will be wearing a recycled version of St Mary’s crown at King Charles III’s coronation without the Koh-i-Noor diamond, confirmed Buckingham Palace. King Charles II’s wife will wear a modified version of the late Queen Mary’s crown which was made by Garrard for the 1911 coronation. It was commissioned by Queen Mary who was the consort of the late King George V, the great-grandfather of the current British monarch.

As a tribute to King Charles III’s mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, the same crown will be modified with Cullinan III, IV and V diamonds which were part of her personal jewellery collection and were worn by her as brooches. Apart from the late Queen’s diamonds, four of the detachable arches of the original crown will be removed. This would provide the headpiece a different look from when it was first worn in 1911.

According to the announcement, it is confirmed that the Koh-i-Noor diamond, which was seized by East India Company in 1849 and presented to Queen Victoria and was also featured in the late Queen mother’s crown in 1937, will not be used.

It is for the first time that a queen consort crown has been re-used since the 18th century. Queen Consort Camilla is said to have made the decision to wear Queen Mary’s crown conspiring sustainability and efficiency.

It is to mention that St Mary’s crown’s design was inspired by Queen Alexandra’s crown of 1902, which means, both crowns can be worn without the arches.
