Queen Consort, Camilla may not wear the Koh-i-Noor Crown, here’s why

Camilla is probably not wearing the Crown with the Koh-i-Noor diamond, which Queen Elizabeth II wore when she was coronated along with King George VI in 1937.

The coronation of King Charles III, slated for May 6, 2023, will have Camilla, the Queen Consort, crowned along with the King. There are reports that the Crown, which Camilla is supposed to wear, will be set aside as an alternative. The Crown has the controversial Koh-i-Noor diamond placed on it, and that might incite a lot of painful memories is the reason that has been cited.

The Crown was specially made for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1937 when King George VI was crowned. That Crown is known to house the famous diamond, the Koh-i-Noor. This historical treasure was captured by the East India Company in 1849 and handed over to Queen Victoria, who made it a part of her Crown Jewels.

A campaign against the UK to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond has been called upon by India, however, Afghanistan and Pakistan also claim ownership.

A spokesman of the BJP, the party currently ruling India headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said this week: “The coronation of Camilla and the use of the crown jewel Koh-i-Noor brings back painful memories of the colonial past. Recent occasions, like Queen Elizabeth II’s death, the coronation of the new Queen Camilla, and the use of the Koh-i-Noor does transport a few Indians back to the days of the British Empire in India.”

The coronation of King Charles III will be held in Westminster Abbey as per traditions.
