Breaking tradition, the position of lady-in-waiting has been removed at Buckingham Palace by Queen Consort Camilla. She has taken the bold step of tearing up the role and starting over. Instead of being aided by ladies-in-waiting, the 75-year-old will be accompanied by six Queen's companions when doing official tasks. The ladies-in-waiting served as the Queen's companion, counsellor and secretary, accompanying her on royal journeys and tours. Camilla, however, has replaced the aides in her style, indicating her new approach to royal life.
The palace confirmed last night that the six Queen's companions are Camilla's loyal pals. They include Sarah Troughton, Jane von Westenholz, Marchioness of Lansdowne Fiona, Lady Katharine Brooke, Baroness Carlyn Chisholm and close friend Lady Sarah Keswick.
Marchioness of Lansdowne is also a professional interior designer, Lady Katharine Brooke is now a non-affiliated counterpart. Keswick’s spouse retired as Arsenal chairman in 2020 after working for 15 years on the board. Lady Lansdowne is the chatelaine of Bowood House, which is close to Camilla's private country estate in Wiltshire.

Some of the Queen's entourage will debut at a Violence Against Women and Girls reception at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. According to a top royal source, Queen Consort does not want or require ladies-in-waiting, and the Queen's companions will play a different function.
They are thought to be among Camilla's oldest and most trusted friends. They would be paid a small amount to cover their expenditures, as did the ladies-in-waiting.
