Qatar evicts migrant workers ahead of football World Cup 2022

Authorities in Qatar have shifted migrant workers from one building to another ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

The eviction of several migrant workers by Qatari authorities from buildings in the heart of Doha has placed a fresh pall over the city's citizens, workers, and FIFA World Cup preparations. According to the administration, the structures were unsafe and unfit for human habitation. As a result, all evictees are now in suitable housing.

Some World Cup spectators will stay in residences in the neighbourhood, where dozens of mechanical diggers are parked in the streets and the affected region has just undergone extensive redevelopment, especially near Al Mansoura.

Three nights after being ejected from one block, Yunus, a Bangladeshi driver, stayed in the back of his truck at Al Mansoura. He claimed that it was his third forced relocation in the last three years.

The South Asian manager of a 24-hour store in Al Mansoura claimed to have seen evictions from two buildings. The occupants are not paid rent or leases. He said that since the World Cup is just around the corner, now is not the time to evict.

The government was referred to for information by Qatar's World Cup organisers, who have reserved several housing towers. An official from the Qatari government said that people living without legal contracts have a window of time to migrate to other locations.

Most of the expelled males, according to locals, would relocate to Doha's vast industrial area or other towns. One immigrant responded that the businesses they work for do not provide enough food and pay for workers' wages.
