Catherine, Princess of Wales, has advised anyone battling substance misuse to get help despite embarrassment, since she knows that addiction is "not a choice". Prince William's wife Kate Middleton claimed that because the victims' relatives were too ashamed to ask for help, people were still dying needlessly, according to reports.
On the opening day of Addiction Awareness Week, The Princess, patron of the charity for addiction treatment, presented a video message supporting the action on addiction campaign.
Evolving perceptions of addiction
She claimed that perceptions of addiction are evolving. Tragically, deaths caused by addiction happen frequently, but individuals and their families are still discouraged from getting assistance. We should already be there, yet we are not.
She went on to say that the only way to get rid of pain was to try to comprehend what caused someone to become addicted, to feel sympathy for them, and to understand their hardships.
