Prince Edward is taking the lead. The Earl of Wessex, 57, performed a significant role during King Charles III's first state visit, escorting South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to two environmental engagements on Wednesday.
On the South African president's penultimate day in the United Kingdom, the morning began with a tour of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Prince Edward and Cyril Ramaphosa made the half-hour journey from Buckingham Palace to showcase the two nations' scientific and conservation ties, including the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership through the South African National Biodiversity Institute.

Prince Edward and President Ramaphosa, both 70, examined the plants in the world-renowned gardens, including the King Protea, South Africa's national flower. The trip also included a ceremonial seed presentation to honour the next phase of the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership, a subterranean hoard of 2.4 billion varied seeds being stored for future use.



Ramaphosa and the queen returned to London for their second visit to the Francis Crick Institute, a scientific research facility specialised in the biology of health and illness. The institute, which includes academics, medicine, and industry, collaborates with the University of KwaZulu- Natal, a South African public university. Prince Edward and the president at the science centre saw the equipment used to identify diseases across Africa, including COVID-19, before meeting with South African students and experts.

Ramaphosa then left for a meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street, followed by a business forum at Lancaster House.
