Premier League: Arsenal appoints Edu as first-ever sporting director
After helping Arsenal transform into a team in the Premier League’s title conversations, Edu has been rewarded with increased responsibility and a historic promotion.

The promotion comes as the result of the sterling work he did in the transfer market along with handling behind the scene responsibility at Emirates Stadium. The new remit for the Brazilian now extends to academy activities though he was already in charge of operations regarding men’s and women’s.
Edu was the former midfielder for Arsenal in the early 2000s and played 79 Premier League games, two times winning the top flight. He returned to the club in 2019 in a technical capacity and worked closely with Mikel Arteta.
Arteta was appointed as a manager in December 2019, since then, the pair have been enjoying a productive working relationship. The result was shrewd transfer business completion for Arsenal, which helped the club reach the summit of the Premier League this season.
As per Vinai Venkatesham, the Arsenal chief executive, the promotion offered to Edu`formalises' his already increasing influence over the academy operations of Arsenal. And that after the critical contribution made by Edu towards the club's progress so far, they are delighted that Edu reconfirms his future with the Club.
As for Edu said he sees the new role as a “consolidation of the way” they’ve been working together, and he’s delighted to have this role.
Further adding that he looks forward to helping everyone associated with the team more success and growth together.
