PPE Medpro: British government takes steps to recoup £122 million

In recent events concerning the UK, The Department of Health and Social care (DHSC) has confirmed that the UK government is ready to take legal action against the private medical firm PPE Medpro. The firm breached the terms of the contract when it supplied the UK government with 25 million sterile PPE kits used for the pandemic. The PPE kits were rejected by the DHSC officials when they arrived at the NHS depot in Daventry.

Furthermore, the alleged involvement of the Conservative Peer Michelle Mone and her husband the Isle of Man-based financier Douglas Barrowmore makes things shadier. Reports complied by the HSBC bank last month suggest that 29 million pounds from the contract were paid to an offshore trust, whose beneficiaries were Mone and her family of three children. There are also reports of Barrowmore being paid 70 million pounds, 65 of which were a part of the company’s profits from its two government contracts.

In their defence, the couple has insisted that they are not connected to PPE Medpro. However, substantial evidence shows that the couple is secretly involved in the firm’s business.

PPE Medpro released a statement saying that the gowns had passed quality checks in China, following which the company was paid in full. They accused the NHS of overordering the PPE kits and said that the case was just a vain effort to recover its money.

The National Crime agency is actively investigating the case and trying to understand the exact nature of the involvement of Mone and her husband in the government contracts.
