Penelope Mary Mordaunt is a British politician, who has served as Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council since September 2022. A member of the Conservative Party, she has been a Member of Parliament for Portsmouth North since May 2010.
Mordaunt is a Conservative politician born in Torquay, Devon. Her father, John, was a paratrooper and mother a special needs teacher at multiple schools. Penny is related to the first Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Snowden, through her mother.
Penny Mordaunt's mother died of breast cancer when she was just 15 years old. After a year, her father was also diagnosed with cancer, but he later recovered and helped Penny with her studies.
Mordaunt studied philosophy at the University of Reading, where she also served as the President of Reading University's Student Union. After receiving her degree, she became the head of youth for the Conservative Party under John Major's leadership.
She has also worked as head of foreign press for George Walker Bush's presidential campaign in 2000 and 2004. She has been recently appointed as the Lord President of the Council and Leader of the House of Commons.
