After an exhaustive 51-year search spanning the globe, a stolen Hofner bass guitar belonging to Paul McCartney and famously used in The Beatles' earliest recordings has finally been located and returned.

This iconic instrument, affectionately dubbed the "most iconic lost musical instrument of all time" by the team behind the search, played a pivotal role in shaping the band's early sound, featuring prominently in hits like "She Loves You" and "All My Loving" from 1963.

Nick Wass, one of the search team's founders, emphasized the guitar's historical significance, noting, "It's the bass that started Beatlemania. That's why it's important, it's the one that got it going."

The breakthrough came after a public appeal by The Lost Bass Project last year garnered widespread attention worldwide. Eventually, someone residing in Hastings, England, came forward, leading to the guitar's return to McCartney's company. Although the instrument was recovered last year, the announcement was made only recently.

The bass, stolen from a van in London's Notting Hill area in October 1972, endured years of obscurity before resurfacing. Despite suffering some damage, including a cracked neck, a damaged bridge, and non-functioning pickups, experts remain optimistic about its restoration prospects.

Hofner, the guitar's manufacturer, has authenticated its identity, bringing closure to McCartney, who expressed gratitude to all involved.

This recovery recalls a similar incident in 2015 when a guitar stolen from John Lennon during the 1960s fetched a staggering $2.41 million at auction in Beverly Hills. The buyer initially acquired it unknowingly, later discovering its profound connection to the legendary Beatle.
