Northern Ireland polls get delayed till January next year. Know why

For another year, the government of Northern Ireland may remain in limbo. Till January 18, 2024, the parties need to form an executive. If they fail, new polls will have to be held within 12 weeks.

The government of Northern Ireland may be in a state of uncertainty for another year as a bill has been proposed that would extend the time frame for political parties to establish an executive. This comes as it marks a full year since the resignation of the first minister, causing chaos in the legislative system.

The revised deadline for the formation of an executive by political parties in Northern Ireland is now, January 18, 2024. In the event that they are unable to come to an agreement by that date, a fresh election will take place within a period of 12 weeks. The new bill also gives Westminster the power to end the extended deadline prematurely and hold elections earlier, if deemed necessary.

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Chris Heaton-Harris, indicated his dismay that the country still lacks "the strong devolved institutions they deserve". He stated that his top priority remains the restoration of the Executive in accordance with the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement and that he would continue to support the political parties in Northern Ireland to achieve this goal.

Paul Givan resigned from his post as the first minister as part of the Democratic Unionist Party's (DUP) growing opposition to the Northern Ireland Protocol, which was established as part of Brexit agreement.

With the resignation of Paul Givan, Sinn Fein’s Michelle O'Neill automatically lost her position as the deputy first minister. This is because the positions of first minister and deputy first minister in Northern Ireland's power-sharing arrangement are a jointly held office, shared by the largest political parties.

In the May elections, Sinn Fein made history by becoming the first nationalist party to win the most seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly elections, while the unionist DUP experienced significant losses. However, with the current leader of the DUP, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, refusing to participate in negotiations until the issues surrounding the Northern Ireland Protocol are resolved, the legislature failed to meet several deadlines set by the UK government for forming an Executive.

The Northern Ireland Protocol is a component of the Brexit agreement that was established to prevent a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. The aim was to maintain the open border established under the Good Friday Agreement. The Protocol requires Northern Ireland to adhere to certain EU import and export regulations, which has led to a new trade barrier between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

This has caused dissatisfaction among members of the unionist community, who see it as hindering trade between the two regions. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has stated that he is putting in maximum effort to reestablish power-sharing in Stormont. Westminster and Brussels are still in negotiations over the Northern Ireland Protocol.
