The first government without a single white man in one of the four most significant ministerial positions in Britain was chosen by Liz Truss, the country's new prime minister.

Liz Truss chose James Cleverley as the first black Foreign Secretary and Kwasi Kwarten, a British citizen with Ghanaian origins, as the nation's first black Treasury Secretary.

The rise in diversity is due to the Conservative Party's efforts in recent years to bring a more diverse group of candidates to parliament. Until a few decades ago, the British government was largely made up of white men. The first time Britain appointed a minority in the cabinet was in 2002.

Suela Braverman, whose parents came to the UK from Kenya and Mauritius 60 years ago, will succeed Pretty Patel as the Second Minister of Home Affairs or Home Affairs for Minorities, and be in charge of police and immigration. Cleverley, whose mother is Sierra Leone and her father is white, spoke about being bullied in the past as a mixed-race child and said the party needs to do more to attract black voters.

Despite the party's diversity campaign, only a quarter of Conservative MPs are women, and 6 percent belong to minorities. Yet the Conservative Party has the best track record as a political vanguard of any major party, including appointing the first Jewish Chancellor in 1868, Benjamin Disraeli.

This is despite the fact that minority voters are far more likely to support the opposition Labor Party, and the ruling party has been accused of racism, misogyny, and Islamophobia.
