The National Health Service (NHS) department in charge of collecting donations has had to issue its first-ever amber alert status because of the severe blood shortage.
O-type blood levels had dropped below two days, so the NHS hopes to keep enough blood on hand to last longer than six days. Hospitals have been instructed to safeguard their supplies, which may cause non-urgent procedures needing blood to be delayed so that individuals in the greatest need can be given priority.
Current O-negative and O-positive donors must now be required to schedule blood donation appointments. It is crucial in times of need and when the recipient's blood type is unknown.

Donations can only be stored for 35 days; therefore, donations are always needed, as are particular blood types. According to the National Health Service Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), the initial four-week duration of the amber notice should allow for the rebuilding of blood supplies. O-negative relief supplies are carried by air ambulances and emergency service vehicles.
The amber status is also assumed to result from ongoing staffing concerns because donor sessions require additional personnel.
