Netflix teases Princess Diana's relationship with Dodi Fayed in upcoming season of 'The Crown'

Streaming giant Netflix has released a tantalising glimpse into the highly anticipated sixth season of its hit series 'The Crown,' hinting at the inclusion of Princess Diana's relationship with Dodi Fayed as a prominent storyline.

The upcoming season is set to delve into the events of the late 1990s, particularly focusing on the final days of Princess Diana's life. Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki, who takes on the role of Diana, expressed how portraying the princess's last weeks was a unique challenge for her as an actor.

The forthcoming season, split into two parts, is scheduled to release the first four episodes on November 16. Once again penned by renowned writer Peter Morgan, who initiated the series' success in 2016, the show is expected to delve into the emotional complexities surrounding Diana's life during that tumultuous period.


In a series of recently unveiled images, the audience catches glimpses of Diana in a car with Dodi, portrayed by Khalid Abdalla. The tragic car crash in a Paris tunnel that claimed their lives on August 31, 1997, is a significant event that will be sensitively handled in the series, as assured by the producers earlier this year.

Furthermore, the images from the upcoming season depict scenes aboard a yacht belonging to Dodi's father, the late business magnate Mohamed Al Fayed, portrayed by Salim Daw. In the show, Prince Charles, played by Dominic West, will reappear, while his sons, William and Harry, will be portrayed in their earlier years by Rufus Kampa and Fflyn Edwards respectively.

'The Crown' is known for its portrayal of real-life events combined with fictional dialogues, a practice that has occasionally drawn criticism for its portrayal of historical accuracy. Netflix has defended the series, clarifying that it is a fictional dramatization based on real events and intended to depict imagined scenarios behind the closed doors of the royal family.

Imelda Staunton is set to reprise her role as Queen Elizabeth II for the final season, following in the footsteps of Olivia Colman and Claire Foy. Staunton expressed her comfort in portraying the Queen, admiring her resilience and composure amidst the ongoing turmoil within the monarchy.
