National Grid will reward households across UK for reducing power consumption; Know how to sign up

National Grid will be rewarding households across the UK for reducing their power consumption tonight, as a part of a live event of its Demand Flexibility Service (DFS).

Under the National Grid scheme, the participants who sign up for it will get a chance to save money if they cut down on their power usage during hours outside of the peak usage time. The Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) requirement has been issued for today between 5 pm and 6 pm when the demand across the nation is at its highest.

Amid the cold weather temperatures, more and more people are heating their homes that further impacting the energy demand. However, the lack of wind has reduced the amount of renewable energy which can be produced for public usage.

Who are eligible to register?


UK households whose energy supplier is participating in the scheme and have a smart meter then they are eligible to register for the scheme. The households which have already signed up will receive a notification of any live events that could help them save money.

According to the official website of National Grid’s ESO, “If you have signed up to take part in the DFS scheme your electricity provider will contact you before a demonstration test or live event and ask if you want to participate in the following day’s event."

The scheme has been approved to stay in place from November 3, 2022, to March 31, 2023, by the energy regulator Ofgem on November 4, 2022. During this time, the ESO will be running a total of 12 demonstration tests which it said will be accompanied by a “guaranteed minimum price of £3KWh”. This means, ESO states, that a typical UK household could save around £100 across the maximum 12 demonstration tests.
