David Schumacher, the nephew of the F1 legend Michael Schumacher, was involved in a horrific crash at the Hockenheim Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) event and broke his spine. David, 20, collided with Thomas Preining on the 6th lap. The crash also gave Porsche driver Dennis Olsen great trouble. Olsen's car went out of control as he tried to avoid a pileup and went into a barrier. Within moments after the impact, his car burst into flames.
The red flag was waved, and the race was delayed. All the drivers involved were taken to be examined by medics after the event was stopped. Schumacher was initially sent home after being given the all-clear, while the others seemed unhurt.
However, Schumacher's father, Ralf, later revealed that he was suffering from a broken vertebra and would not be able to participate for the next six weeks as he recovered. Ralf recalled to Motorsport magazine that when David returned home, he was still complaining about his back pain, which later turned out to be a broken lumbar vertebra, resulting in six weeks' rest for the young racer.
