In an unfortunate set of events, the revered annual British music award ceremony Mercury Prize has been postponed for this year, owing to the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The music award recognizes the best album released in a year by either a British or Irish act. A new date for the 2022 Mercury Prize will be announced soon.

Was the award ceremony already underway?

When the news of Queen Elizabeth II broke, the introductory stages for the evening event, which was due to be held at London Eventim Apollo, were already ongoing. The management announced to the guests in the room, apologized for the inconvenience caused, and informed them that the ceremony would not proceed further. They also said that dinner would not be served for the evening and requested the guests to finish their drinks and kindly leave the venue by 7:30 pm.

What about the red carpet and media interviews for the 2022 Mercury Prize?

Before announcing Queen Elizabeth II's death, the pre-ceremony events, including the red carpet and media interviews, and the press conference for the winner were also scrapped. The management released a statement subsequently saying that at the time of this great national mourning, the event has been postponed, and the condolences are with the royal family. Any announcement for future arrangements will be made as soon as possible.

The authorities also displayed a black and white photo of the Queen Majesty outside the venue. Artists including Little Simz and Sam Fender had already arrived for the event and prepared for the show. This year's Mercury Prize nominees includes Harry Styles, Sam Fender, Jessie Buckley, Wet leg, Gwenno, Kojey Radical, and Self Esteem.
The winner will get the trophy and the cash prize of £25,000.
