Mercedes F1 team boss Toto Wolff has opened up about Lewis Hamilton missing record breaking championship title due to a turn of fate in Abu Dhabi 2021 finale. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was all set to grab the championship title making it his eighth win and breaking the record. But things turned out a little different, When Nicholas Ltifi crashed into Williams, a late safety card was triggered. The correct procedure was not followed by the race director, Michael Masi during the restart.

This allowed a few benchmarkers to restart the race a lap earlier as they were able to unlap themselves. Max Verstappen got the opportunity to overtake Hamilton and take over the world title.

A full investigation to find out the details was launched by the FIA. Mercedes protested a lot regarding the result and was set to take this matter to the court but backed down last minute for the sake of the sports. The FIA tried to draw a line throughout these events. Many questions remain about what happened that day!

Masi signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement to never talk about the details of it.

Team Principal and CEO of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team kept silent for several days post the finale due to his anger at how events had unfolded. He can be seen following it with a positive approach. He has mentioned in an interview that he was disappointed as Hamilton missed out on a historic event but he can be proud of holding seven titles as well. The goal is to get the right performance. He also says if Lewis is provided with a good car, why would they think about getting eight titles and not ten titles instead?

Many Hamilton supporters do take issue with the win and continue to believe he was robbed of the historic eighth title which would have set him apart from Michael Schumacher. The season was quite unsatisfactory as both the men deserved to be champions but the rulebook mentions otherwise.

Verstappen had led the championship by a large margin and before going to Abu Dhabi, he had won nine races compared to Hamilton’s eight.
