Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood to spend night in prison before court appearance

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood was arrested and charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling & coercive behaviour, and assault causing real bodily injury.

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood was taken in custody on Sunday evening before appearing in Manchester Magistrates' Court on Monday. On Saturday, Greenwood was charged with trial for rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault causing actual bodily injury. All three counts are about the same person. The Manchester United striker is also under investigation for allegedly violating his release restrictions by contacting the alleged victim.

Greater Manchester Police charged the footballer after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised the case to proceed. GMP said on Sunday morning that Greenwood would be remanded in jail until his first hearing.

The 21-year-old has not played for Manchester United since January, when he was bailed after being arrested on suspicion of rape, violence, and making threats to murder. On Saturday, Manchester United issued a statement saying, "Manchester United observes that the Crown Prosecution Service has lodged criminal charges against Mason Greenwood. The club has suspended him to wait for the conclusion of the legal proceedings.

On Saturday, the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor, Janet Potter, for CPS North West, confirmed the decision to charge Greenwood, saying that the Crown Prosecution Service has authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with sexual assault, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
