Filmmaker and playwright Martin McDonagh's 2003 production ran at the National Theatre and received critical acclaim. However, instead of moving to West End, it transferred to Broadway for one season. McDonagh has discussed the revival at West End for years, and it was scheduled in 2020 finally with Steve Pemberton and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. However, the plans were postponed because of the pandemic before Taylor-Johnson dropped out. It is around 20 years later that Matthew Dunster will direct the second British production of the legendary "The Pillowman." Dunster has helmed most of Martin McDonagh's productions lately, including the massive hit ‘2:22-A Ghost Story’.
