A UN peacekeeping soldier from Ireland was killed in action and three other soldiers were injured in an attack in Lebanon. On their way to Beirut on Wednesday night, the soldiers' armoured vehicle is said to have been ambushed by a mob and fired at.
In a hospital close to Sidon, one soldier was confirmed dead upon arrival, and another had surgery and is in a critical condition. The other two soldiers are receiving minor injury treatment.

Simon Coveney, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ireland, told RTÉ radio that he believed two armoured patrol vehicles were travelling to Beirut for routine business when the incident happened. He remarked that it is very sad that one of their peacekeepers was killed and another was critically injured. This happened when the two armoured vehicles got separated, and one of them got surrounded by an aggressive mob.

Coveney added that when they held a personnel review in Galway prior to their departure on this mission, he would have, of course, had the opportunity to get to know many of these young guys. He commented that these soldiers were brilliant, intelligent and committed. He also commented that this is the worst news a family could ever get. He expressed his condolences to the soldier's family too.
