Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer wants to abolish House of Lords. Check out what is this house actually

As part of his promises to "establish faith in politics", Keir Starmer proposes to eliminate the House of Lords and replace it with a new elected parliament.

Sir Keir Starmer has strong feelings regarding the House of Lords of the United Kingdom. He says it should be replaced with a new elected parliament.

The House of Lords is a body of the United Kingdom Parliament. It is separate from the ‘House of Commons’, where Members of Parliament (MPs) debate and vote on new legislation. Members of the Lords are referred to as "peers”. They, like MPs, scrutinise government activity and offer revisions to proposed law. Peers, unlike MPs, are not elected. The monarch appoints the majority on the suggestion of the Prime Minister.

While many of their peers have worked in politics, including several former members of Parliament, others are professionals in fields, such as science or the arts. The majority of peers serve in the Lords for life, while some choose to retire.

The House of Lords now has 785 peers, making it the world's second biggest legislative chamber followed by the National People's Congress in China. Most Lords are entitled to a daily allowance of £332 for each sitting day attended, but they can choose not to claim it.

Labour believes the Prime Minister should not have the authority to nominate peers, citing previous contentious nominations such as businessman Peter Cruddas. In place of the Lords, Labour proposes an elected second chamber known as the Assembly of Nations and Regions.

It might have 200 members from all around the UK. However, how they are picked and how long they will serve are still unknown. According to Sir Keir, the new system could be implemented within the first five years of a Labour government. Labour will provide further information, including a timetable, closer to the next election.
