In her statement, Wark expressed her deep privilege to be a part of a rigorous and creative program alongside her talented colleagues. She looks forward to coming to the office every day, learning from her team, and covering a wide range of topics.
Wark had discussions with the BBC director general, Tim Davie, and Newsnight editor Stewart Maclean last year regarding her desire to step down after the upcoming election.

During her time with Newsnight, which began in 1993, Kirsty Wark reported and presented from various locations, including Scotland after the 1996 Dunblane massacre and the United States, where she interviewed victims of the Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro. Her coverage has spanned eight UK prime ministers.
After her departure, Kirsty Wark intends to focus on completing her third novel. While leaving will be a significant transition, she anticipates exciting times ahead.
