The man allegedly fell from the Wheatland Lane bridge in Wallasey early morning on Sunday. Officers arrived on the scene early and commenced CPR on the man. However, an ambulance took the man to the nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. The identity of the deceased person remains unknown at the moment.
Following the incident, the police blocked the tunnel on both sides, and traffic was diverted to the Birkenhead Tunnel. Reports confirmed that an investigation was underway, with an emergency services team deployed at the scene. The tunnel was reopened after the police completed its inquiry into the scene.
Later in the afternoon, the police received another report regarding the safety of a man inside the Kingsway Tunnel at around 2.30 pm. The Merseyside Police stated that the Kingsway Tunnel and the surrounding roads were shut. The department urged the public to take alternate routes and thanked them for their patience.
The city’s transport department, Merseytravel, tweeted that Arriva bus nos. 432 and 433 would be diverted through the Birkenhead/Queensway Tunnel. The transport executive confirmed the temporary closure of Scotland Road's north and south-bound slip roads.
