King Charles’s coronation to be a bank holiday? Here’s what can be expected

On May 6 (Saturday) 2023, King Charles will be crowned. As the confirmation about the date finally comes from Buckingham Palace, there’s speculation around a probable announcement of a new bank holiday to mark the occasion.

Though the confirmation about a new public holiday is yet to come from the Palace, Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Business Secretary, gave some hints about the possibility of it.

He said that to celebrate the “splendid historic” occasion, a day off would be “appropriate”.


The date of the coronation of King Charles III was confirmed on Tuesday by Buckingham palace. It also confirmed that it would occur alongside Queen Consort Camilla.

The coronation ceremony will take place eight months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the monarch’s accession in Westminster Abbey.

“Eminently suitable”

While speaking to BBC on Wednesday, Rees-Mogg said a bank holiday seems an “eminently suitable” thing to do while backing the calls for a bank holiday. He further added that the Privy Council must approve it following due process.

The month of May traditionally has one bank holiday at the start and the other at the end. The coronation ceremony falls just five days after the first bank holiday of May.

As for Britain’s tourism industry, they have already backed an extra bank holiday, saying that it could boost the economy.
