Amid the cost-of-living crisis in the UK, King Charles III’s coronation is expected to be less extravagant than his mother’s ceremony which took place at least seven decades ago. King Charles’ coronation on Saturday, May 6 will be followed by three days of celebration.

On May 7, there would be a ‘Coronation Big Lunch’ and ‘Coronation Concert’ which would be followed by an extra bank holiday on Monday, May 8. The ceremony would be allowed public participation on the last day during ‘The Big Help Out’ when they can volunteer in their communities.

In a statement, UK Secretary for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Michelle Donelan said that all people in Britain are “invited to join in, on any day”. UK public can take part in KIng Charles III’s coronation ceremony by hosting street parties, and gatherings to watch the live broadcast, among other activities, according to Donelan.

Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace also said that the coronation itself would be a “solemn religious service” while also noting that it would be a celebration and pageantry. The three-day ceremony, according to the palace, will reflect King Charles III’s role in today’s day and age while looking towards the future.

In the interpretation of the palace’s statement about the ceremony, royal experts have expressed that King Charles III’s coronation would be different and more subdued from the one that was put together for his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. It should be noted that the late Queen’s coronation was the first televised royal event and it lasted for three hours.
