These new polymer banknotes, featuring the likeness of King Charles, will come in denominations of five, ten, twenty, and fifty pounds. They will join the existing notes that bear the image of the late Queen Elizabeth.
According to the Bank of England, the issuance of banknotes featuring King Charles will primarily occur when existing notes are worn out and to meet any increase in demand for currency. This approach aligns with guidance from the Royal Household and is intended to minimize both the environmental and financial impact of the transition.
The transition to the new banknotes will be gradual, with the BoE emphasizing a careful and measured rollout over time. This strategy is in line with the environmental advocacy efforts of the 75-year-old monarch, who is renowned for his dedication to environmental causes.
Following Elizabeth's 70-year reign, King Charles ascended to the throne in 2022, making him the second monarch to be featured on the Bank of England's banknotes. In addition to banknotes, the Royal Mint began introducing coins bearing his profile into general circulation toward the end of 2022.
