In Shamima Begum's UK citizenship case, her lawyers told the judges that Shamima Begum may have been a victim of child trafficking for sexual exploitation.

Shamima Begum's story

Shamima Begum's lawyer made a new appeal at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) hearing, saying she was lured to Syria as a child.

She was a GCSE student and left in 2015 with two other friends. After being taken to Syria, she married an IS fighter and gave birth to three children. all of whom died shortly after birth.

She was later found in a Syrian camp in 2019. But Sajid Javid, the home secretary, revoked her British citizenship and restricted her from returning to the UK.

Samantha Knights, representing Shamima Begum, argued that one hasty decision gave Shamima a lifetime exile from her hometown. She told the court that the Home Office revoked Shamima's citizenship without any prior investigation or considering that Shamima, a 15-year-old schoolgirl, may have been a victim of child trafficking.

Shamima Begum's lawyers argue that there is strong evidence supporting the claim that she was transported to Syria. While James Eadie, the government representative, said Shamima was aligned with IS, Eadie added that Shamima showed no remorse or regret about joining IS.
