Leo Varadkar, former Tanaiste (deputy prime minister) has taken on the role of Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) as part of the arrangement that supports the coalition government. The Fine Gael leader has switched positions with Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin. During a special session of the Irish Parliament, the 43-year-old Varadkar was nominated and then went on to meet with the president. He told the lawmakers that the coalition was formed "in a spirit of togetherness" during the COVID-19 pandemic and stated his intention to maintain this spirit. However, the task will not be easy, as Unionists hold Varadkar personally responsible for the Brexit border in the Irish Sea and have threatened a renewal of loyalist violence in response to his return as Taoiseach. Varadkar has also faced controversy and a police investigation over the leaking of a GP report and has seen a decline in popularity in polls. He will be hoping to turn things around in the two years leading up to the next general election.
