The UN General Assembly has adopted December 2 as the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery to raise awareness of the dangers of slavery, forced labour, child labour, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking, as well as to call for an end to modern-day slavery.

The UN General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of Human Trafficking and the Exploitation of Others' Prostitution (resolution 317(IV) of December 2, 1949) on this day. The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery focuses on the abolition of modern forms of slavery such as sexual exploitation, human trafficking, forced marriage, child labour, and so on.
