Health experts issued a warning about a new Covid variant, codenamed Eris, that is rapidly spreading across the United Kingdom. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has revealed that one in seven Covid cases in the country is now attributed to the Eris variant.

First identified as a concern in July 2023, Eris has now become the second most prevalent strain in the UK, closely trailing behind Arcturus. Disturbingly, Eris is also making its presence felt in Europe, Asia, and North America, with Japan reporting a concerning "ninth wave" of Covid infections.

Alarming Rise in Eris Variant Cases

Recent data indicates a worrying trend in Covid-19 cases related to the Eris variant. Around 5.4% of tests conducted on individuals with respiratory illnesses in the past week turned out to be positive for Covid-19, a significant increase from the 3.7% recorded the previous week.

Furthermore, the overall Covid-19 hospital admission rate for the most recent week rose to 1.97 per 100,000 population, up from 1.17 per 100,000 in the previous report, as reported by Wales Online.

Health Authorities on High Alert

Dr. Mary Ramsay, head of immunization at the UKHSA, expressed concern over the rising Covid-19 cases in the latest report. While there has been a slight increase in hospital admission rates across most age groups, particularly among the elderly, she assured that overall admission levels remain extremely low. The situation is closely monitored, and there has been no significant increase in intensive care unit (ICU) admissions so far.

Dr. Ramsay emphasized the importance of regular and thorough hand washing to protect against Covid-19 and other viruses. She advised individuals with symptoms of respiratory illness to avoid contact with others whenever possible. Additionally, the UKHSA plans to administer the seasonal vaccine in autumn 2023 to eligible individuals based on health conditions or age, urging everyone to take up the vaccine when offered.

Uncertainty Surrounding Eris Variant

Professor Paul Hunter, an infectious disease specialist, commented on the uncertainties surrounding the impact of the Eris variant on the UK. Known as EG.5.1, the variant has a growth advantage of 20.5% over other strains, according to UKHSA. Professor Hunter cautioned that it is too early to determine the full implications of the Eris variant. The World Health Organization has already added EG.5.1 to the list of monitored variants, signaling global concern.

Contributing Factors to Rise in Cases

Professor Lawrence Young, a virologist at Warwick University, suggested potential contributing factors to the recent surge in Covid cases. He pointed out that poor weather conditions in the last month have led to increased indoor interactions, such as during university degree congregations and higher cinema attendance. These gatherings may have facilitated the spread of the Eris variant.

As the UK grapples with the rapid spread of the Eris variant, health authorities, and experts are closely monitoring the situation and advising the public to take necessary precautions to limit its transmission.
