Nik Turner was exposed to rock music at 13. He was first a roadie for Hawkwind. The multi-intrumentalist for the British rock band contributed big time in psychedelic music through his projects like Inner City Unit, Sphynx, and Space Ritual.

Nicholas Robert Turner, popularly known as Nik Turner, was born in 1940 in Oxford. He got exposure to the rock genre of music after he shifted to Margate town in Kent at the age of 13. Turner learnt saxophone and started considering performing free jazz after reaching Berlin. In 1999, Turner told Mojo that he had decided to play free jazz in a rock band.
