The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have dismissed The Sun’s apology over their recent publication of a column in which Jeremy Clarkson made lewd comments about Meghan terming it a PR stunt.
The column in question received more than 20,800 complaints. This became a record-breaking article with the most complaints in the history of the U.K.’s Independent Press. The extract that attracted these complaints saw Clarkson wishing for Meghan to be paraded naked on the streets of Britain with crowds throwing garbage and screaming at her. The Sun later apologised by expressing its regrets over the publication of the article. They also removed it from all of their websites and archives.
A spokesperson for Meghan responded to the newspaper’s apology by dismissing it as a publicity stunt. They highlighted the fact that the newspaper has not yet contacted the Duchess for a personal apology. The spokesperson later blamed The Sun for putting the Duke and the Duchess in this situation due to its tendency “to profit off of and exploit hate, violence and misogyny. A true apology, for the Duchess, “would be a shift in their coverage and ethical standards for all.”

The thing with unconscious bias – it is actually no one’s fault. But once it has been pointed out, or identified within yourself, you then need to make it right, he said.

Jeremy Clarkson also tweeted from his account claiming that his comment was merely a reference to a scene from the popular web series ‘Game of Thrones’. He apologised for his insensitive reference and for hurting so many people and referred to his mistake as “clumsy”.
The Sun distanced themselves from Clarkson in a statement where they established the columnists’ opinions are of their own. They also realised their responsibility that follows such free expression and admitted to their failure in keeping a check.

Clarkson’s column came as a response to the Duke and the Duchess’ highly anticipated Netflix documentary where the couple opened up about some of their private experiences. Clarkson utilised the column to express his frustration at the duchess. Many, including Caroline Nokes, a Conservative MP, now demand the newspaper take action against Clarkson.
